Michael Armitage at White Cube

Michael Armitage paints scenes drawn from life in Kenya where he grew up. These paintings have a lush and expressive quality, often making allusions to other painters such as Velasquez, Van Gogh and Gauguin. Making richly worked surfaces on bark cloth where the paint applied and then scraped back, Armitage invests his scenes with psychological tension and uncertainty.
