A Strong, Sweet Smell of Incense: A tribute to Robert Fraser at Pace
Curated by the painter and glass artist, Brian Clarke, the exhibition takes its title from a famous police report describing a raid on a party attended by the art dealer, Robert Fraser, and Mick Jagger. A press photograph of the two leaving court for possession of Marijuana became an iconic artwork by Richard Hamilton representing the cultural changes of the 1960s. The exhibition brings together works made by many artists represented by Fraser including Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Claes Oldenburg, Ed Ruscha, Jim Dine, Peter Blake, Jann Haworth, Richard Hamilton, Eduardo Paolozzi, Keith Haring and Derek Boshier. The show also includes letters and photographs showing the art dealer as mentor and friend to artists.
